CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA, June 26, 2008 – GlaxoSmithKline recently received marketing authorization from the European Commission for Volibris® (ambrisentan), a compound indicated to improve exercise capacity in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) patients. Ambrisentan is the first European approved medicine for the treatment of PAH in WHO Functional Class II patients.
Myogen, later acquired by Gilead®, engaged Addison Whitney to develop and test proprietary name candidates for ambrisentan. Gilead now owns the US marketing rights for ambristentan, as well as the trademarks Volibris and Letairis (the US brand name). Myogen previously awarded EU marketing rights to GlaxoSmithKline.
Addison Whitney developed and validated the name Volibris for ambristentan. The name suggests freedom and liberation from the symptoms of PAH, specifically the reduced energy levels limiting the patient’s physical activity. The US and European brand names for ambrisentan, both created by Addison Whitney, are connected by the shared suffix.
