Therapeutic Area: Cardiovascular
Gilead Sciences is a biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops and commercializes innovative therapeutics in areas of unmet medical need. Myogen, later acquired by Gilead in October of 2006, engaged Addison Whitney to develop and test proprietary name candidates for its compound in development for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), ambrisentan. Ambrisentan is an endothelin receptor antagonist (ERA) indicated for the treatment of PAH (WHO Group 1) in patients with WHO Class II or III symptoms to improve exercise capacity and delay clinical worsening.
The Addison Whitney creative team developed the name Letairis. A Medication Error Prevention Analysis was conducted to ensure Letairis did not pose a high probability of brand confusion, from a look- or sound-alike standpoint, with other pharmaceuticals on the market. The results of this study were presented to the FDA in a regulatory submission document developed by the Addison Whitney team, providing support for the eventual approval of the name.
